TEAM KCMG TARGETS SUPER FORMULA POINTS AT SPORTSLAND SUGO

Team KCMG heads to Sportsland SUGO this weekend for Round 5 of the 2022 Super Formula championship, as they look to add to their points tally at the rural Japanese circuit.

After taking second place with Toyota in last weekend’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, Kamui Kobayashi returns to the scene of his podium for the Hong-Kong based squad in 2019, while teammate Yuji Kunimoto has his sights on a strong finish after just missing out on the top-10 in the previous round at Autopolis.

Opened in 1975, Sportsland SUGO has been hosting Japan’s top-tier of motorsport since 1987. The circuit provides a special challenge for the drivers, with corners such as the S-curve, Rainbow and 110R making up the 3.704-km layout, the shortest on the current calendar. The track is also notorious for its elevation changes, with a variation of 69.8 metres per lap.

Qualifying for Round 5 takes place on Saturday 18 June, with the race getting underway on Sunday 19 June.

#7 KAMUI KOBAYASHI

“Sportsland SUGO is a really fast and flowing circuit, and one that I’ve always enjoyed racing on, so I’m looking forward to going back there. It was great to get on the podium here with KCMG in 2019, and we’ll be aiming for a similar result again. The team is working hard to continue improving our performance and it would be nice to deliver another solid finish this weekend.”

#18 YUJI KUNIMOTO

“The crew has been very busy with the development of the car, so we’re aiming to make some progress on track. I’m excited to be returning to Sportsland SUGO again, it’s a really fun layout and one where you’re on the limit all the time, so it’s really enjoyable to drive. I’m hoping we can qualify well and finish with points on Sunday.”

TSUGIO MATSUDA TEAM MANAGER

“We’re excited to return to Sportsland SUGO, it’s a very narrow and unique layout and a circuit where you can never really predict what’s going to happen. We’re looking to use that to our advantage and try to achieve a good result for both drivers. We’ve been hard at work and hopefully we can be competitive and take some good points here.”
