KCMG ROUNDS OUT 2021 SUPER FORMULA SEASON AT SUZUKA

Team KCMG rounded out its 2021 Super Formula campaign at Suzuka last weekend, with Yuji Kunimoto showing strong pace in qualifying.

2016 Super Formula champion Kunimoto started the season finale in 10th, but had difficulties with grip on race day, crossing the line 15th.

Standing in for Kamui Kobayashi, 22-year-old Kazuto Kotaka showed further improvements on his previous outings with Team KCMG, but was also unable to score points, finishing the race in 18th.

Super Formula returns next season with two pre-season tests at Suzuka and Fuji in March, before the 2022 season gets underway at Fuji on 9-10 April.

#18 YUJI KUNIMOTO
“The car felt good in qualifying, unfortunately we just missed out on Q3 but it was still a decent performance. In the race I couldn’t find enough grip to maximise the car’s potential. It’s a disappointing way to end a frustrating season. We had good moments and times where we showed a lot of speed, but we couldn’t put enough weekends together to be competitive. Nevertheless, I want to thank the team for all their efforts this season, it’s always a pleasure to drive for Team KCMG.”

#7 KAZUTO KOTAKA
“It was great to race again in Super Formula and I love testing myself in this series. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get the tyres to the right temperature in qualifying and then we had difficulties in the race. I’m proud to have competed in Super Formula this year, but disappointed not to have put in better performances for the team. Thanks to them for their continued support in me throughout the season.”

TSUGIO MATSUDA TEAM MANAGER
“Yuji showed his ability and the car’s potential in qualifying and was very close to making it through to Q3. On race day we didn’t have the pace to progress, meaning neither Yuji nor Kazuto could finish in the points. It’s been a tough season overall. I believe we could’ve scored more points if certain things had gone our way, but that’s the way it goes in motor racing. We’ll look to improve over the winter months and come back stronger in 2022.”
