KCMG takes maiden Formula Pilota podium in Shanghai

KCMG had a strong weekend at the season opener of Formula Pilota China as British driver Dan Wells lies third in the series standings after completing the three races during the inaugural 2012 event at Shanghai International Circuit.

Wells broke the ice and started the race weekend delivering strong results as he constantly challenged at the front during testing and eventually secured sixth and third positions during qualifying the following morning.

The VISA Global Logistics and BAM Motorsport Promotions backed driver took a strong fifth position in Race 1 but came back faster in Race 2. Finishing second, Wells led the race for four laps and had an exciting wheel to wheel battle with eventual race winner, Shota Kiyohara.

Starting position for Race 3 was determined by the driver’s fastest lap from the first race. Wells made a good start from seventh on the grid and was challenging for fourth position, however contact with another competitor towards the end of Lap 1 caused him to lose his front wing. Wells struggled to finish Race 3 in twelfth position.

Despite the Race 3 result, KCMG remains positive as Wells swept points for the team in the first two races and ensured third position in the series standings.

The 21-year-old British driver, who made his mark in Formula Renault UK Finals Series last year, is extremely pleased to be finally racing in Asia and to be KCMG’s representative for Formula Pilota China. Wells’ first event in an Asian series has definitely shown his competency as a talented driver. Wells states, “I’m really pleased to have come away with a fighting 2nd to take KCMG’s first podium in FPC and to be 3rd in the championship, which gives us a good foundation to build on in our title challenge this year. I have to thank VISA Global logistics, BAM Motorsport Promotions, KCMG and all our other partners who are supporting us and I am looking forward to challenging at the front again at Ordos in 3 weeks time.”

KCMG Deputy Managing Director John O’Hara expressed, “We are happy with the positive outcome of our first three races here in Shanghai. The team worked well over the weekend and I am very pleased with how Dan performed, especially during his feisty Race 2 drive. We are looking forward to the next event in Ordos and our aim is to secure our first win.”

The second event of Formula Pilota China, which will comprise of Rounds 4-6, will be held at Ordos International Circuit on July 7-8 in Inner Mongolia.
